Acne scar removal: No need to wait

Q: I am 20 and my acne has improved with medication but the scars remain. If I stop taking the medicine, the acne returns. Should I have the scars treated now, or wait until the acne goes away? (from Nicholas, Woodland Hills)

A: No reason not to treat the scarring now. You’re at a vulnerable age, and self-confidence counts.

There is a lot of ignorance out there about acne scarring. Actually, it’s quite common. Sometimes the marks go away on their own.

To be classified as scar, the skin defect has to persist for a year or more after an acne lesion has healed.

But no one can deny there are social and psychological components to having lasting facial marks such as those resulting from acne.

Also, failure to treat acne scars can result in more scarring.

There are home remedies out there, but unlike treatments offered by dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons, they often are not effective in getting rid of the more severe scarring left behind long after acne clearing.

At Nu Vela Esthetica, we offer treatments that are less invasive than traditional solutions. These are state-of-the-art acne treatments.

As an example, when fractional laser resurfacing is applied, the skin surface is healed within 24 to 48 hours — a fraction of the time required with full laser resurfacing. Some people call this procedure “the weekend laser peel.”

During the initial consultation at Nu Vela Esthetica, I’ll evaluate the severity of your acne scars and may suggest one or more treatments best-suited for your skin condition.

There is no reason not to do the medical treatment and healing of the scars at the same time.
